Current Events

I found an article about a lawsuit brought over a moment of silence before starting school. Parents of a student in Texas, sued the school district because they said it was a way for the government to advance religion. When I looked further into the reason for a moment of silence, it had been given as an alternative for the kids who didn’t want to say the pledge of allegiance to the flag. Those kids who didn’t want to say ‘under God’ or to publicly admit they might be proud to be an American. When my mom and I talked, she even pointed out that this was in Texas. The state where our former President Bush lives.

I don’t understand how a moment of silence can be acceptable instead of saying the pledge of allegiance. Even more, I don’t understand how a moment of silence can be thought of as a prayer when it’s being used in protest of what our country has been founded on. All I can say is I am glad that the Texas courts upheld the moment of silence. Or am I, when I think it’s ridiculous in the first place?

It makes me realize just how blessed I am that I have parents who work hard and want me here at Freedom.
